Hangouts get improved calling function in new update

Hangout instant messaging application has recently received an update to v7.0. The new update bring a number of bug fixes and some new features, most notable is the peer to peer call feature, which allows Hangout put a direct call between two users, when possible, unlike the old way of routing calls through Google servers only. Although, this new feature has a downside which the exposure of the calling parties IP addresses. “With an IP address, it’s possible to approximate your location”.

Other than revealing the IP addresses of a caller and a call receiver, the peer-to-peer connection provides an improved audio and video quality during calls as well as an increased efficiency in putting calls through. Hopefully, the problem of IP exposure will be solved in time by Google.

The new features coming to Hangout users via the new version of the app; are making way to the Android version of Hangouts already. However, the same cannot be said of iOS and BlackBerry hangout app.

This new feature could provide Google’s Hangout the needed boost, which will turn the instant messaging platform a notable contender to the likes of Whatsapp, BB messenger and Facebook messenger.

Which instant messaging application do you prefer?
