Huawei’s sub-brand, Honor, has had a busy week, which has the seen the company release a number of products, including their Honor 6X mid-range smartphone, Honor Pad 2 tablet and the Honor Watch X1 smartwatch. The company has now launched its latest processor, the Kirin 960, a successor to the Kirin 955 found in this years flagship devices, Huawei P9 and P9 Plus.
The Kirin 960 is Huawei’s new flagship processor, and it is the company’s best offering till date. The chip is built using a 16nm FinFET manufacturing process integrating the big.LITTLE architecture, as it utilizes four Cortex-A73 cores clocked at 2.4GHz, and four inferior, Cortex-A53 cores clocked at 1.8GHz. The processor will coming top notch GPU processor, the Mali-G71 MP8 GPU. This GPU is rumoured to be inside the Galaxy S8 billed for next year.
According to Huawei, the Kirin 960 will offer a 15% increase in CPU efficiency compared to the Kirin 950, while the GPU is 20% more efficient, and its graphics performance is increased by 180% relative to its closest predecessor. The Kirin 960 offers support for LPDDR4 RAM, and can boost of download speeds of up to 600Mbps due to the fact that its modem supports 4G LTE Cat. 12/13. For uploads, Kirin 960 can handle speeds of up to 150Mbps. The SoC also comes with CDMA support, and supports radio frequencies spectrum from 330MHz to 3.8GHz. The new SoC is also prepped to be energy efficient and equipped with a new Image Signalling Processor (ISP) which boasts advancements for camera capabilities. However, this is largely dependent on the optics used in the smartphone.
According to benchmark test results, Kirin 960 outperforms all other processors in the multi-core test and is only second to Apple’s A10 processor in the single-core test. The Kirin 960 is expected to debut inside the upcoming Huawei Mate 9 flagship. So we will be having high hopes for the Mate 9 as it is expected to high-end feature packed smartphone.
