Samsung files patent for a smartwatch that can scan veins

Technology innovations are constantly pushing the envelope; in terms of what the human perception considers possible. Over time, we have seen large-sized technology devices miniaturized to fit into a phone or for entertainment purposes; a good example will be the current nano-drones. Most striking, is the fact that more innovations are on the horizon, some almost ready to revealed. Samsung’s recently filed smartwatch patent is another technology innovation pushing the envelope on whats possible or not.

The South Korean based company recently filed a patent for a smartwatch that can takes a picture of your “vein structure and characteristics,” and saves it to its database. The wristwatch uses the saved data base to identify a user whenever the wristwatch is put on, ingenious; right? If the watch’s wearer is identified as the owner, the wristwatch unlocks, enabling access to the wristwatch’s functions and owner data. This function is similar to that performed by fingerprint scanners attached to smartphones. According to the patents data, this smartwatch will be able to perform this function by using with two lights and a camera on the side to capture a users vein.

You might be wondering why a smartwatch will need such a security feature. If am to hazard a guess, I would say this smartwatch, obviously made for more than telling time, will play a role in actualization of the futuristic Internet of things (IoT) technology agenda. In a curious at the same time skeptical demeanor, I shall await this technology.

Meanwhile, Samsung is not the only one pulling out some ingenious smartwatch patent; Nikon reportedly filed a patent for a wristwatch that practically emits fragrance. The future of smartwatches is definitely taking shape, it is certain that smartwatches will be prominent in the IoT age.
