MTN announces significant reduction in data price and 4G launch in July

Earlier this year MTN acquired Visafone for an undisclosed amount, from then on; it was obvious that it won’t take long before we saw Africa’s largest telecommunication network launching a 4G service here in Nigeria. MTN is acting as expected and the company has announced through there Twitter page that they will be launching a 4G service come July. As good as this news is, it’s not as good as MTN’s accompanying Tweet that stated that they have slashed their data prices across the different Data plans the ‘Yellow! Company offers. This is a very welcome news and I believe you share the same opinion.

Here are the new data prices

Plan Old Plan Old Price New Price Activation Code
50MB 50MB N200 N100 text 104 to 131
750MB 750MB N2000 N500 text 103 to 131
1.3GB 260MB N1000 N1000 text 106 to 131
3.75GB 750MB N2000 N2000 text 110 to 131

MTN’s upcoming 4G network launch forebodes a future where data will be cheaper than it is, as a result of the competition in the space already heating up; we have Smile, Spectranet, Swift, Ntel, Glo and the rest offering 4G service already.

Let us hope, MTN will serve up affordable data and quality service together. Before now, we’ve seen network providers that slash their data prices, consequently quality of service is reduced. Furthermore, we may see other network providers respond to MTN’s price slash with a price slash as well; perhaps Etisalat this time around.
